British Consular Service (6 galleries)
Having established the Treaty Port system under the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, it was Britain that dominated the resulting trade in all but a few of the Ports, at least until the commencement of hostilities by Japan. Consequently, while other powers were well represented, by far the largest number of Consulates in China were British; in virtually every Port there was a presence. Several of these buildings remain today and those that we have been able to visit are included here.
