Butterfield & Swire (4 galleries)

The former Butterfield & Swire buildings (and those of its main operating subsidiaries) were the first qualifier for a collection. This was not so much due to its early appearance in the alphabet but rather to the assistance and flow of information provided over recent years by the archivists at John Swire & Sons.

The former Butterfield & Swire buildings (and those of its main operating subsidiaries) were the first qualifier for a collection. This was not so much due to its early appearance in the alphabet but rather to the assistance and flow of information provided over recent years by the archivists at John Swire & Sons.

I recommend a visit to the G. Warren Swire ("GWS") collection of images at https://www.hpcbristol.net/collections/swire-g-warren. GWS was a partner in his father's firm, John Swire & Sons, from around 1904 and was a keen and skilled photographer. His collection was built-up over the many regular visits GWS made to the firm's operating subsidiaries in China and provides a wonderful pictorial record of trade on the 'China Coast' in those days; and a number of the firm's buildings contained therein may still be seen today.

Due to the number of images, the collection is split, using the Yangtze River as a rough divide between North and South.
